Ian - westernAfter five years as Director of Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit and thirty years as a lawyer, Ian Scott is returning to private practice. Called to the bar in 1983, he has focused his practice on criminal and administrative law, working as both a Crown prosecutor and defence counsel.  He has also represented police services and governmental agencies at administrative tribunals, most notably Police Services Act hearings and inquests.  As Director of the Special Investigations Unit, Ian was responsible for all of the investigations into incidents of serious injury and death, as well as allegations of sexual assault, involving on-duty police officers in the province. During his five years, he reviewed over one thousand investigations and laid over fifty criminal charges involving incidents of this nature.

Ian is the author of the Police Services Act of Ontario, An Annotated Guide (Third Edition), the co-author of Salhany’s Police Manual of Arrest, Seizure and Interrogation (Eleventh Edition), as well as many articles in the criminal law and police oversight area.  His most recent book,  Issues in Civilian Oversight of Policing in Canada, is now available.  Check out the blog page for more information.
